Apple Announces 25 Billion Songs Sold on iTunes

Apple has just announced that a whopping 25 billion songs have been downloaded from theitune music store . Apple has also announced that a German iTunes user who downloaded the 25 billionth song was awarded an iTunes Gift card of €10,000. The 25 billion song to be downloaded was “Monkey Drums” (Goksel Vancin Remix) by Chase BuchApple had launched the iTunes Music Store almost 10 years back on April 23rd, 2003.
Here’s an excerpt from Apple’s press releaseabout the milestone:
“We are grateful to our users whose passion for music over the past 10 years has made iTunes the number one music retailer in the world,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Averaging over 15,000 songs downloaded per minute, the iTunes Store connects music fans with their favorite artists, including global sensations like Adele and Coldplay and new artists like The Lumineers, on a scale we never imagined possible.
Apple has announced that the iTunes Music Store now offers 26 million songs in over 116 countries.
Horace Dediu of Asymco points out that the current iTunes song download rate is about 18 million per day and new app download rate is about 65 million per day. If you include movies, TV shows, Mac apps and ebooks, the overall iTunes download rate is about 100 million new items per day, which generates approximately $30 million in revenues per day.
