As you may all know already, Google has finally released the newly-enhanced Google Maps application on iOS after being absent for numerous months. If anyone can recall, Apple decided to do away completely with Google Maps for iOS 6 and worked with TomTom in order to create a new in-house mapping solution. Unfortunately, the new iOS 6 Maps have several glaring issues that could only be attributed to the Cupertino company's lack of experience. Now Google Maps is back in action, and is proving to be as popular as ever. Even better, we have a jailbreak tweak that will set the new Google Maps as your default application.

At this point, it would be understandable if you would prefer to use the new Google Maps in favor of the iOS 6 Maps. This is especially true if you are one of the many who have been experiencing some serious problems with it. By default, when using your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and you click on a link, you will be ushered to the old iOS 5 app or the new Maps website in iOS 6. So having tried the new Google Maps and loved it, you would likely want to set it as your default mapping software. So how can you set the new Google Maps as default?

S developer HASHBANG Productions have created a really simple tweak called MapsOpener. Basically what this tweak does is set the new Google Maps from the App Store as the default handler for maps links. So whenever you click a Google Maps link, you will not be redirected to the built-in iOS 5 Google Maps or the Maps website in iOS 6. With that said, it goes without saying that you should have the new Google Maps installed on your iOS device before you can use this tweak. We were able to test the tweak and it definitely works as advertised with no bugs whatsoever. The MapsOpener tweak is pretty straightforward with no Home screen icon or settings to configure.
MapsOpener is available in Cydia via the BigBoss repo and it can be yours for absolutely nothing. This is a good way to utilize the new Google Maps app in a more permanent manner.
You will need to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPad touch before you download and install MapsOpener.
